Centrally located between three distinct urban neighborhoods, this 18 classroom Middle School is designed to be a unifying force within those areas. The design intent is to create a building that can help to integrate these communities into a larger whole and to increase the interaction among the inhabitants. As such, the public spaces within the building are designed to be utilized not only by the students themselves but by the populace at large as well. The dynamic shape of the building is composed of two opposing circular arcs connected by a public piazza formed by the void between the two arcs. Considering its intended function as a unifying element within these neighborhoods and its relation to the environment, the school is seen to assume the role of a public garden where light and transparency are extremely important. For this reason, the building has a light metal structure with large glazed openings that allow for maximum visibility both from the inside out and from the outside in. As such, it is hoped this visual link will provide a high degree of connectivity between the life of the school and the life of the surrounding communities.
