Our design for this competition could be described as ‘dynamic’ in the sense that the perception of the architecture derives from the movement of the visitor through a succession of experiences and states of emotion. The residences are composed of three distinct layers: heavy, massive stone walls – linear and rigid in form; an intermediate metal panel wall system – lighter and more articulate; and finally, the more free-form glass curtain wall facing the bay – light, transparent and sinuous like the terrain. These three layers establish a succession of visual and tactile experiences distinguishing the three primary components of the residences: entry; circulation; and living space. In addition, these layers establish a metaphor for the historical evolution of building technology through the use of progressively newer, more articulated construction systems. This system of metaphorical experiences culminates inside the apartments themselves with a sudden exposure to the exquisite view. The competition winner was Zahia Hadid of London, England.
