In designing this project it
was decided to explore three
universal themes – those of
‘Matter”, “Being” and
“Passage.” By their very
nature, these themes are
fleeting, transitory and
indeterminate. As a result,
we began to think of the
building as being without a
conclusive form, defined and
closed, but more as a
building that explores the
dynamics of ‘Becoming’.
The oblique walls of
the building create a
centripetal force that
serves to guide the visitor
from the entrance to the
heart of the project, the
Hall of Departure, where the
services of remembrance are
conducted. The hall is
formed as truncated oblique
pyramid, the faces of which
are splayed along lines of
force both imaginary and
indefinite. From this space,
profound views of the sky
and the hills nearby suggest
that even at this moment -
life has a value - in its
very best sense. At the
center of the building
stands a white monolithic
tower with a reflective
light, aligned with the
zenith, where the remains
are transported to an
underground service area,
incinerated and the ashes
subsequently.
